Frequently Asked Questions

An ISO auditor is someone who is trained to perform detailed and external assessments on the management systems of any organisation. An ISO auditor should be a certified auditor or lead auditor with the requisite skills and knowledge to undertake third-party audits.

Whether an ISO auditor has undergone ISO 9001 training, ISO 14001 training, etc., they have a responsibility to ensure systems and processes comply with applicable ISO standards.

To enter the field of auditing as an ISO auditor, there are certain skills and requirements you need to prepare you for the rigours of this post.

  • Certificate, diploma or degree in a technological, environmental or management-related field
  • Work experience related to accounting, management, occupational systems, quality assurance and statistics
  • ISO 9001 certified auditor training (e.g., ISO 9001 internal auditor training) and certification in an establishment like Global Compliance Certification (GCC)
  • High level of analytical, management and communication skills
  • Demonstrated auditing skills and experience

Becoming an ISO 9001 lead auditor is an exciting career advancement opportunity. However, you need to have the right training and audit experience to be considered for this important position.

If you’re looking to work as an ISO 9001 lead auditor someday, keep in mind that there are some steps you should follow to get there:

  • Work on gaining auditing or any relevant experience. This can include work with quality management systems and process audits.
  • Attend and complete the required ISO 9001 training. After finishing ISO 9001 internal auditor training at GCC, for example, you still need to complete ISO 9001 lead auditor training.
  • Apply for a lead auditor post in a certifying body. However, note that applying for an ISO 9001 lead auditor post and meeting the requirements may not be enough. You may be required to complete some in-house training, as well as observe or assist in actual audits before becoming a full-fledged audit team member and being considered for a lead auditor post.

As an ISO 9001 lead auditor, you have more responsibilities than the other auditors on your team. You’ll have to handle the assigning of audit tasks and provide final judgement in cases of non-conformance, among other things. Therefore, it makes sense to have stricter requirements for people who want to become ISO 9001 lead auditors.

According to EN ISO 9000:2015, para 3.10.4, to be considered a competent ISO auditor, you need to possess the ‘ability to apply knowledge and skills to achieve intended results.’

Competency is a major requirement to become an ISO auditor. This is why certification bodies have set competence criteria against which all personnel involved in audit and other certification activities are evaluated.

Therefore, the responsibility of declaring or deciding on ISO auditor competence falls on the certification body.

Aside from making sure you have auditing (or related) experience and undergoing ISO 9001 certified auditor training, and completing ISO 9001 lead auditor training, you also need to conduct a self-evaluation.

Ask yourself: Do you have the skills necessary to become a successful lead auditor? Do you have the required educational qualifications or background? If you have the required skills and qualifications, then it’s highly likely you’ll succeed in your quest to become a lead auditor.
